Q: Was doing Like Mike a jump from doing music videos?
BW: Not really because I'd been around a movie set before. I know how things work, I know how everything is organized and programmed. It was like a piece of cake because I did TV shows and different things like that. Basically, to me a TV show was like a movie but for thirty minutes. Just acting. Cameras, crew, and it was no different from what it was doing Like Mike, so it was real simple for me.
Q: How long have you been playing basketball?
BW: For like ten years. Ever since I was five, so I'm going on sixteen now. That's been my ultimate dream to go to the NBA and play professionally, not rapping, not acting but basically just to go to the NBA and do what I do now, just acting and rapping. I just love the thrill and wouldn't trade it for the world.
Q: Was it fun to meet the NBA players?
BW: Jonathan, he couldn't meet them all because he... we went to Philly, Philadelphia, and basically Jonny had to stay, so they only showed me at the time. I think he only met Derwin Duvinsky and Steven Nash. He met like five of the players but I met twelve of them. It was fun. I had the opportunity to work with basketball players who I watched and admired as I was growing up so it was lovely and I'll never forget it.
Q: Do some of them want to rap?
BW: Yeah, we rappers want to act, actors want to rap, basketball players want to rap and rappers want to play basketball, so it's all tied in with each other.
Q: Did you get chance to go one–on–one with David Robertson?
BW: No, I got a chance to one–on–one with Jason Kidd, Gary Payton and I think that was really it.
Q: Jonathan, do you rap?
JL: In the shower! Besides that nowhere else. I've rapped a little with Bow Wow.
Q: Who's your favorite rap star?
JL: I like Ludacris, Ja Rule, Bow Wow!
Q: What about Eminem? Is he the guy who gets the ultimate respect?
BW: Definitely man, definitely! Especially in the rap game. Him and Jay Z are the two most powerful rappers that are out right now and that's all this guy does. Listen to Eminem, he says it word by word, sentence by sentence, phrase by phrase. Every single word he knows it!
Q: Have you both seen 8 Mile?
BW: No, I haven't, but I'm trying to go see it. I'm going to see Harry Potter; I've been turned into a Harry Potter fan. I've just watched the first movie like two weeks ago because I look at movies like that as "I don't want to see it, it's not my type of movie, yada, yada, yada" and so I just took the time out to watch it, and it was the only thing on TV, so I just watched it and ever since I've just watched it like three times back to back; I'm just addicted to this whole Harry Potter thing so I'm on my way to go and see the second one today, which will be good because this is like the home town of Harry Potter at the end of the day and I get the opportunity to go and see it.
Q: Are you too a fan of Harry Potter?
JL: Yeah, but I'm more of a fan of other things. But I have seen 8 Mile.
Q: What's the big thing for you now?
JL: I really like a lot of stuff; I've seen quite a few things that I really like. I've just seen Signs on the airplane and that gave me the scares pretty good. I loved how it was shot, it was shot amazing.
Q: Did you sit and watch Kieran Culkin and think damn, that could have been me?
JL: No, because there's plenty of parts out there. A lot of people think kid acting is so competitive. It's not competitive, it's about playing the characters and doing your role, it's not about the competitiveness. There's this new thing where people are like, "Well, I beat so and so for the role", there's no "I beat" You just get the role or you don't. It's like you're meant for the role or you're not. Some people can make themselves meant for the role, that's what a lot of true actors... you can do any role but some person may be that character and they may be it more than you.
Q: You must be annoyed when you don't get a role you want though.
JL: I've been really, really lucky to get what I've done and I've got a lot of what I've auditioned for but I know a lot of it is they usually go older or younger or it's just not my character; somebody just played the character better than me which I can accept and they have the role.
Q: Is the best thing about going on a 'press trip' not having to do any school?
JL: I'm still doing school, I'm doing school! They send me a lot.
BW: He has his tutor with him, I left my books at home. It's like a trip for me; I've had to do no school since I've been over here, it's been great! Usually I'm a last minute person, Christmas shopping: last minute, homework: last minute; I do my homework the day she's coming, that's basically how I do it.
Q: At least with a trip like this you've got the whole room service thing going on.
BW: I really don't eat room service that much; I like to go out. When I'm back home in the States I order room service to death but over here the room service food kind of differs; I really like to go out and venture off and go to... my favorite place here, to eat here, that's why I always have to come to London, is Nando's. I love Nando's, it's like a must; I have to eat that!
Q: Is it easier for you to go to places like that than in the States?
BW: Nah! Definitely not. That's what I thought, that's what everybody thought; this is my aunts first time over here, I brought her with me and she thought maybe nobody's going to bother you guys over here and as soon as we got to London, we went to McDonalds and these two girls, I guess they just came from school, and I'm in the line ordering something to eat and all you hear is "Oh my God!" and they started screaming and I was like "Why are they screaming?" and they just walk over and ask if I'm Bow Wow and it's "Oh my God, here we go!" You can‘t run away from it, it's everywhere. We did this TV show this morning and I swear to God there were girls outside lined up. It's crazy, wherever I go, from here to Cologne to Sweden it's all over, you can't run from it.
Q: How much of your fan mail's from girls?
BW: As far as my fan mail? I remember they used to come to my house, like all the mail would come to my house and we used to have crates and crates and crates of mail so I gave it all to the record company who run a club now, Club Bow Wow, and they write back and make sure they get merchandise and make sure they get everything back. They feel good about themselves when they write in, not just writing in and wasting their time when they write in; we get back to them and they send them stuff. It's real cool.
Q: Is it good getting attention from teenage girls?
BW: Definitely! It's like I don't want it to stop. There's definitely no negative points about it and I definitely don't want it to stop! I love it man, I get loads of attention. I'm just like a person who if I didn't get attention I wouldn't know what to do but I'm definitely like an attention getter, so is Jonathan; he's an attention getter as well.
Q: Do you have a fan club Jonathan?
JL: Not that I know of.
Q: In your last film you played soccer. Any intention to catch a match while here?
JL: I don't think I will because I'm not here that long. I'm going to have a good time.
Q: Did you see parallels between your experience and your characters?
BW: There's definitely a big difference between myself and Calvin. Calvin was like this never wrong type of kid, he's very quiet, he's always right, he always thinks positive, everything is planned out. It's kind of like with myself; in a way I'm similar to Calvin in a couple of ways because I think like Calvin, I've got my positive persona, I have everything planned out and I know what my goals are and what I want to achieve in life but at the same time I'm not a quiet kid, I'm not always nice… I've been asked a lot of questions about being compared to Calvin… with Calvin it happened like instant, like it happened so fast but with me it took a moment for my songs to be put out and it took two months for everybody to start recognizing my singing, Calvin became a star in two days, so it's kind of similar.
Q: What are your goals or ambitions?
BW: My goal was definitely to go to the NBA; I want to play professional basketball and that's something I've been wanting to do ever since I was little, and win a Grammy, that's it. If I get those two I'll close the book, I've got everything; everything is checked. I've got to have boxes on everything with red big check marks on it but the only thing that has not been checked off yet is going to the NBA and getting a Grammy.
Q: Aren't you still a bit on the short side for the NBA?
BW: There's a guy in the NBA shorter than me by the name of Earl Boykins who is like his [points to Jonathan] favorite player in the NBA; he's no taller than Jonathan. I'm taller than Earl Boykins and besides I'm quick. And besides the best players are short in the NBA so you never know.
Q: When you think of basketball players you think of really tall people ...
BW: The average size for a basketball player in the NBA is 6ft or 5.8ft and my dad was like 5.8ft or 5.9ft so I have no problem.
Q: What do you want to do with movies?
BW: Take it to a whole other level; just keep working hard, keep doing movies, I like to try new things and venture off and I have my new sitcom, my own TV show and that will be on the air sometime next year and I have my clothing line so I have a lot of things as far as the whole movie aspect. I'm just trying to take it as far as possible so I get to the point where I stop and I can't go no further. It's good just to keep going; it's good that you're happy but you still want to keep going. Jonathan for example, has done Jerry Maguire, Stuart Little and Stuart Little 2. It's like you can't stop there, you've got to keep going, that's one thing, you have to keep working hard.
Q: Do you think there's a breakout audience for rappers in movies?
BW: That's one of the reasons I did Like Mike, not just because of the basketball not only because it seemed fun and interesting at the time but also because I wanted to do it because the storyline, the same reason Jonathan did it, and I just felt like this was the right time and I wanted to reach over to a different audience to where people understood and knew who I was but to reach out to middle America because there's some people who don't go to the movies, some people who just sit at home and don't do nothing and for me to do this movie threw everything in a loop because I reached that audience that I didn't reach by going to the studio every night and making records so it was definitely a pleasure for me to do this movie and it just kind of crossed over and I think this is why the movie has been a success in America; the movie has done over $60, $70 million so that‘s a blessing for our first movie and we have the DVD coming out and there's a lot of things coming ...
Q: Will there be a Like Mike 2?
BW: Aw man! $70 million? There'll be a Like Mike 5. It'll be like a Rocky or something! But there's no telling. It'd be nice to work with Jonathan again, he's a real cool kid and I have fun working with him. He's like the coolest little kid on his block and I like hanging around with him and he loves hanging around with me, he's just a fantastic kid to work with.
Q: What was it like working with Crispin Glover?
BW: It was fun working with him. It was kind of weird working with him because he took everything so seriously. When we do close–ups usually we have a camera and a piece of tape where we look but it's different with him. He wants the person present off camera so every shot me and him did together I had to be on the side of the camera and the camera was right here so it was weird working with him but on top of that he's a professional; he does his job and takes it very seriously and I'd work with him again, he's real cool, he's a really cool person and what's good about him is he stays in character and doesn't let nothing break. He stayed Bittleman for the whole four or five months; like you cannot break him at all, you cannot break his concentration; it's so strong and that's one good thing about Crispin Glover. I like working with him.
Q: How involved have you been with the DVD?
JL: We did a commentary on the whole thing.
BW: A lot of deleted scenes and extra scenes that didn't make the movie, pictures, it's just got so many special features that I can't wait to get back to the States because that's the first thing I'm going to do, I'm going to pick it up because it comes out on the tenth and I believe the movie comes out over here on the twelfth so it's right around Christmas here and back home it was right around the fourth of July so it plays on the holidays which is really good, so hopefully I'll get some Christmas here and some Christmas back home with the sales over here and the sales of the DVD so it's going to be a really good end of the year for us.
Q: Did you get lots of NBA goodies?
BW: We went to the NBA store in New York and NBA hooked us up with everything.
JL: Nike also sponsored it, so we got some stuff from them.
Q: Do you have a basketball hoop at home or do you have a proper court?
BW: Yes, indoor!
JL: I've got a hoop.
Q: Do you play in celebrity basketball games?
BW: Yeah, during the Celebrity All Star Weekend and different things like that.
Q: Have you played against Frankie Muniz?
BW: Yeah, I embarrassed Frankie! I embarrassed Frankie Muniz on the basketball court in front of ten thousand people at the Staples Center where the Lakers play. So we has a celebrity game, as a matter of fact I was on Snoop's team and he [Frankie] was on Snow Dogs team and he was on the other team and had to guard me and that was something he did not want to do. It was so funny but he's a real cool kid who likes to play basketball as well, in fact he's in the celebrity league. He's pretty good, I don't know if he's better than me but he's pretty good. I'd definitely play him again, I'm not afraid to play nobody!
Q: What's next for you Jonathan?
JL: The director from Like Mike and I just did a low budget film and we did it for seven weeks and it's a great film and it's amazing. It's called When Zachary Beaver Came To Town, it's a novel by Kimberly Willis Holt.
Q: Are you doing another Stuart Little?
JL: No, well I don't know actually. No one tells me anything! I don't know, I hope but ...
Q: How do you maintain a sense of a normal life?
BW: I don't want to get swell headed because I don't want to lose my fans and my family, because once you lose fans and respect from your people and from your fans that's the worst thing ever. You're better off jumping off a bridge and in the water. That's the worst thing you can do is to lose respect; respect is like so powerful and over in the States they take that very seriously with celebrities having big heads, thinking they're too good for the fans; won't sign autographs and that's something I don't do but it's hard to live a normal life because you're surrounded by the public, like you said, growing up in front of people's eyes and it's hard to go out and eat dinner with your friends and your family or try to go out to the mall or go out and walk or go to a movie because people don't understand sometimes you work so hard and you fly so much you just want to come home and don't want to be bothered at times, you just want to relax with your family and different things like that. But I don't let things like that stop me; if I want to walk I'll walk, if I'm going to get mobbed I'll get mobbed. So what? This is the life I chose, I love my fans to death, so does Jonathan; he was out in the freezing cold today signing like a hundred autographs so it's just something I wouldn't do but it's the life I chose and I always make sure there's a time a place for me to be a kid and right now I'm playing basketball in this league and so is Jonathan, so we don't let nothing stop us.
Q: Has the success you've had enabled you to meet your heroes?
BW: Well I got the chance to meet Michael Jordan a couple of years back. It's funny because when I was Jonathan's age it was the only person in life I wanted to meet and I met him at the age of thirteen and five more times after that and all of a sudden Michael Jordan's son is one of my best friends so its funny and the person I'm waiting to meet is Michael Jackson and Ozzy Osbourne. Those are like the only people I want to meet. I want to do MTV and go to his house for the weekend while they film it. It'd be hilarious! Those are the only two people that I haven't met that I really want to meet.
JL: I'd like to meet all three. I watch his show. I've met quite a few people; I've met the NBA stars on this, I met Tony Hawk. I've met a lot of people and it's very exciting.
Q: Is it downhill after making a movie with Tom Cruise in terms of famous people?
JL: The interesting thing was everybody asked me was I intimidated by Tom Cruise and I was too young to be intimidated ...
Q: Did you know who Tom Cruise was when working with him?
JL: No, at first I didn't but then I saw Top Gun and I'm like "Oh Tom!" I think I can always find something and I'm going to take a step up every time. I was just a little kid then and I can take a step up meeting famous people, Tom Cruise; yes he's famous but you barely notice it when you're working with him because he doesn't put it on you or anything which I really like.
Q: Has Snoop Dogg been on the phone asking for acting tips?
BW: He hasn't asked me for no tips but if Snoop calls me asking for advice or tips I'd definitely do it man, I mean he's given me a lot of tips and advice in life so why not.
