On the set of Jerry Maguire, Tom Cruise bought
Jonathan some remote control toys to keep him entertained between takes. Jonathan
said that on the set of the movie everyone was like a big family, and that it
was a really great experience for his first film.
In 1997 Jonathan received two awards for his role as Ray Boyd in
Jerry Maguire. He was presented
with the National Broadcast Film Critics Association award for the Best Child
Performance,
and the Young Artist Award for the Best Performance in a Feature
Film: Actor Age Ten or Under. He was also nominated in the same year for the YoungStar Best Performance by a Young Actor in a Drama Film Award.
Jonathan has always had an interest in baseball, and used to consider it one of
his favorite sports. In 1997 he was a batboy in a celebrity All Stars baseball
game, afterwards interviewing Ken Griffey Jr. He has also played in celebrity
charity baseball games, and sang Take Me Out To The Ballgame on PA, for the Seventh Inning Stretch at Wrigley Field,
Chicago, on July 29 2000.
Despite sci-fi TV comedy Meego only
running for 13 episodes, in 1998 Jonathan was nominated for the Best Performance
by a Young Actor in a Comedy TV Series for his role in the sit-com at the
YoungStar Awards.
In 2000, another award was added to Jonathan's collection when he won the
YoungStar Award for Best Young Actor/Performance in a motion picture comedy (Stuart Little) giving him a total of three awards before the age of ten! In the
same year he was nominated for the Best Performance in a Feature Film - Young
Actor Age Ten or Under (Stuart Little)
award at the Young Artist Awards.
Although Jonathan is usually called Jonny, he was nicknamed El Fuego on the
Jerry Maguire set because of his
endless energy, and J.Lip on the
Stuart Little sets.
Jonathan enjoys tasting local cuisine when he travels, admitting to having eaten
some pretty weird stuff including whale! He says he particularly likes Chinese
and Japanese food though, and his favorite fast food
place is In 'n' Out.
Jonathan's 10th birthday fell on the same day as the world premiere of
The Little Vampire. Jonny,
along with the rest of the cast and crew, enjoyed a birthday cake with a picture
of Tony, Jonathan's character, on.
Jonathan was titled one of the heroes of 2001 by
JDRF for his wonderful
contributions to the charity.
JDRF is the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and Jonathan first became interested in the charity after
learning that the Stuart Little
producer's daughter had the condition. Jonathan continues to support and be
involved with the charity.
Jonathan has made public speeches on behalf of
JDRF, as well as in support of
stem cell research. Jonathan supports various charities, such as Campfire USA, a
non-profit organization for children, and the
Starlight Children's
Foundation.
2001 saw another two nominations for Jonathan. This time for his portrayal of
Tony Thompson in The Little Vampire. He was nominated for Best Performance in a Feature Film - Young
Actor Age Ten or Under at the Young Artist Awards, and Best performance by a
Younger Actor at the Saturn Awards.
Jonathan loves sport, one of his favorite's being water polo which until recently he played for his high
school team. He also really likes basketball and says that his favorite team is
the LA Lakers. In the past Jonny has classed
skateboarding as one of his favorite hobbies and once said that his best skateboarding move was the 50 50
grind. Jonathan still enjoys skating but is not as involved with it as he once
used to be.
Jonathan's sister, Alexis, was born October 1 1987, making her three years his
senior. It was Alexis that first got Jonathan into acting, and she has
appeared along side him in minor parts in two of his movies. She was a wedding
guest in Jerry Maguire and a
background vampire in The Little Vampire.
Jonathan is a keen drummer, and owns a set of oyster blue drums. In early 2005
Jonathan was drummer in a four-piece band at his school called
Thanx Mr. Unfortunately the band
split up as a couple of members were changing schools. In 2006, however,
Jonathan joined a new band called Warfrog.
Warfrog also had four members,
including the same bassist from Jonny's previous band
Thanx Mr. After only one performance
Jonathan felt he had to resign as drummer due to work and water polo
commitments. Jonathan is not currently in any bands but practices his drums regularly, and
luckily, unlike most parents in their situation, Jonathan's mom and dad support
his drumming.
In late 2004 Jonathan was cast alongside Sir Ben Kingsley in a Warner Bros.
movie, Knights Of Impossingworth Park, which was to be a family film about a
young Asian girl called Christine, who was visited by a 1000-year-old knight.
Jonathan, who was to play the character of Mike, met Sir Ben Kingsley in 2005,
and the two were very much looking forward to working together on the film in
England and Vietnam. Shooting for Knights Of Impossingworth Park was postponed
from 2005 due to Kingsley's other commitments, and rescheduled to be shot
sometime during 2006. Unfortunately the film was eventually cancelled
due to
lack of funding.
In 2006, Jonathan was to take on his first professional role as co-producer on a
feature-length documentary called After School, about the rise in the number of
young female teachers having affairs with their teenage students. The
documentary was to include a short film in which Jonathan would play the role of
a student being seduced by his teacher. It was later decided that the short film
would not be featured. Jonathan was asked to stay on as co-producer, but
declined the offer due to other commitments.
Rhonda, Jonathan's mother, has always been interested in acting and used to act
in plays when she was at school. She also worked as co-producer on Jonathan's
first independent movie,
When Zachary Beaver Came To Town, and was to work as associate producer
on the documentary After School, but due to other commitments to Jonathan's career she
did not stay on.
